Introduction
Life aboard a space station is a study in adaptation. In the weightless, or microgravity, environment, the most common daily activities on Earth—such as eating, sleeping, and working—require specific techniques and equipment. Astronauts follow structured routines to maintain their health, well-being, and productivity while living in orbit.
Eating and Mealtime
Food in space is prepared to be safe, nutritious, and easy to manage without gravity. Space food, often called astronaut food, is processed using methods like dehydration, thermal stabilization, and freeze-drying to ensure a long shelf life and minimize weight. Meals are stored in packages that can be attached with magnets or Velcro to a tray, which is then secured to a surface or the astronaut's lap to prevent it from floating away. Before eating, astronauts add water to rehydrate meals. Drinks are consumed from sealed packages with straws. While early space missions featured food in tubes or bite-sized cubes, astronauts on the Space Stations have a wider variety of foods, including fresh fruits and vegetables delivered by cargo spacecraft. To combat the dulling of taste buds that can occur in microgravity, meals are often accompanied by condiments like soy sauce, honey, or hot sauce.
Sleep and Rest
Sleeping in microgravity presents the unique challenge of having no "up" or "down." Astronauts sleep in small, personal cabins that contain a sleeping bag. They can attach this sleeping bag to the wall, the ceiling, or the floor—in space, these are all the same. Without the pressure of a mattress, many astronauts find they sleep comfortably floating in place, often with their arms drifting in front of them. Eye masks and earplugs are commonly used to block out the constant light and noise from the station's life support and other systems, helping to create a consistent day-night cycle despite the fact the station experiences a sunrise and sunset every 90 minutes.
Exercise and Physical Health
The human body undergoes changes in microgravity, including muscle atrophy and bone density loss, as it no longer needs to work against Earth's gravity. To counteract these effects, astronauts dedicate about two hours each day to exercise. The station is equipped with specialized equipment, such as a treadmill and a stationary bicycle, to which astronauts must be strapped to generate resistance. They also use an advanced resistance exercise device that uses vacuum cylinders to simulate weightlifting. This consistent physical training is a standard part of the daily schedule to ensure astronauts remain healthy and are prepared for the return to Earth's gravity.
Work and Daily Operations
A significant portion of an astronaut's day is dedicated to work. This includes conducting scientific experiments that are unique to the microgravity environment, maintaining and repairing the station’s complex systems, and communicating with mission control on Earth. Astronauts also perform tasks related to the station itself, such as installing new equipment and managing computer systems. Much of their work requires careful planning and movement to manage the lack of gravity; tools are tethered, and motions are controlled to avoid drifting. They also participate in public outreach, sharing their experiences with people on Earth. The work is diverse, ranging from biology experiments, like caring for fish or plants, to physics research and technology demonstrations.
