Imagine the very beginning of our universe. For the first few moments after the Big Bang, the cosmos was far too hot and dense for anything we know to exist—not even atoms. It was a swirling, super-hot soup of tiny, energetic particles. But the universe was expanding and cooling incredibly fast. A single proton is the nucleus of a hydrogen atom, the simplest and lightest element.
When two protons and two neutrons collided and stuck, they formed the nucleus of a new, heavier element called helium.
A tiny, tiny amount of an even heavier element called lithium was also created when a few more particles clumped together.
